Helping a family member or loved one get treatment for a psychotic disorder
If you have a friend or family member whose life has been impacted by a psychotic disorder, you may be experiencing a variety of conflicting emotions. Feelings such as sadness, concern, fear, and frustration are valid and completely understandable. When an adolescent or adult struggles with an untreated psychotic disorder, loved ones are also affected.
To best support your loved one, and to help them get the psychotic disorder treatment they need, please consider the following:
- If you fear that your loved one is at risk for self-harm or suicide, get help immediately. Call 911 or contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
- Educate yourself about psychotic disorders. The more you understand how your loved one is being impacted, the better prepared you’ll be to offer valuable support and meaningful solutions.
- Research treatment options and identify psychotic disorder treatment centers near you. Remember that there’s no such thing as a perfect psychotic disorder treatment center. Find the programs that appear to be the best fit for your loved one.
- Talk to your loved one. Perhaps even more importantly, listen to them. Share your concerns, emphasize your love and support, and discuss treatment. Leave no doubt that you are available when they need you.
- Your loved one may initially resist your suggestions about getting help. Don’t argue, judge, or issue ultimatums. Keep the lines of communication open. This effort may take some time.
- Consult with experts. They can help you understand psychotic disorders, guide you in your efforts to find the right psychotic disorder treatment center, and offer insights into how to help a person who is resistant to getting help.
Don’t lose sight of the fact that a psychotic disorder is a complex challenge. Treatment for a psychotic disorder is an important step on the path toward improved health, but it’s just one step. Plan to be a source of ongoing support for your loved one every step of the way.
Why consider getting treatment for psychotic disorders at Rio Vista Behavioral Health in El Paso, TX
Untreated psychotic disorders can have a devastating impact on a person’s life. Adolescents and adults who need, but fail to receive, effective treatment for psychotic disorders may struggle in the context of their personal relationships, academic progress, employment, and financial stability.
In the absence of comprehensive treatment for a psychotic disorder, a person may be at increased risk for worsening symptoms, the onset of co-occurring disorders, and a myriad of health problems related to impaired ability to follow medical advice and perform basic self-care tasks.
But when an adult or adolescent receives effective professional treatment for a psychotic disorder, they can minimize their risk for continued harm. While they’re receiving care in a psychotic disorder treatment center, adults and adolescents can begin to heal from past damage and prepare to live a much healthier and more hopeful life.
At Rio Vista Behavioral Health, teams of experienced professionals offer dynamic, personalized treatment for adolescents and adults who struggle with psychotic disorders. Our age-appropriate services are customized to meet the specific needs of each person who is entrusted to our care, and we offer detailed discharge planning to promote continued success.
Your path to improved health can begin at our psychotic disorder treatment center in El Paso, TX.

At our psychotic disorder treatment center, we believe in the importance of patient-centered care. We tailor each individual’s treatment plan to meet their specific needs in a way that works best for them. We believe that recovery is not only possible, but expected. The staff members at our psychotic disorder treatment center in El Paso, Texas, take pride in delivering the highest quality of care in the region. Through comprehensive treatment and support, each patient discovers their strengths and resiliency and leaves our psychotic disorder treatment center equipped with the skills they need to be successful on their journey to complete recovery.
Our psychotic disorder treatment center is divided into four coed units, each of which offers tailored care for a specified population. These units include a general adult unit and a psychiatric intensive care unit for patients age 18 and older, an adolescent unit for patients ages 11-17, and a specialty unit for geriatric patients and patients with coexisting medical conditions. Please note that there is not an established age range for the specialty unit. Instead, we determine admission into this unit based on the diagnosis and the capabilities of the patient.
At our psychotic disorder treatment center, patients have access to the following interventions and services, depending on their needs:
Medical care: For patients who are suffering from coexisting medical conditions, our psychotic disorder treatment center offers basic medical care. The services we provide include continuation of medications for chronic illnesses, insulin and glucose monitoring for patients with diabetes, and minor wound care. We do not provide medical equipment, but if a patient has a CPAP machine, they may bring it with them and use it during their time in treatment. We do not offer IV or oxygen therapy, nor do we provide care for indwelling catheters or wound vacs. Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants provide all of our medical services.
Medication management services: Patients meet with a psychiatrist within 24 hours of admission into our psychotic disorder treatment center. Patients who are on medication or will be starting on medication meet with the psychiatrist daily throughout their stay. Psychiatrist visits are also available on an as-needed basis at our psychotic disorder treatment center.
Group therapy: Group therapy is at the core of the care we provide at our psychotic disorder treatment center. Licensed clinical social workers and therapists lead group therapy sessions, where patients can learn about mental illness, including psychotic disorders, and discover ways to cope with and manage their symptoms. Group sessions also give patients the opportunity to connect with others who may be experiencing similar circumstances. Patients participate in five to six structured groups per day, seven days a week. These groups include discussions on things such as mindfulness, coping with grief/loss, and healing from the effects of trauma.
Individual therapy: At our psychotic disorder treatment center, licensed clinical social workers and therapists provide individual therapy sessions for patients when needed. These sessions offer a safe, confidential space in which patients can discuss any concerns they have or issues they are struggling with that they may not feel comfortable sharing in a group setting.
Family therapy: We also offer family therapy on an as-needed basis at our psychotic disorder treatment center. Licensed clinical therapists and social workers run these sessions, which give family members the opportunity to learn more about ways they can help their loved one both during and after their time in treatment for psychotic disorders. These sessions can also serve to unify families and strengthen their bonds with one another.
Evidence-based treatment modalities: In order to ensure that patients at our psychotic disorder treatment center receive innovative, holistic care, we use an integrated approach that offers a broader spectrum of therapeutic interventions that have proven to lead to more successful treatment outcomes. Examples of the evidence-based treatment modalities we use at our psychotic disorder treatment center include the following:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy
- Art therapy
- Recreational therapy
Continuing care options for psychotic disorder treatment
Inpatient care at our psychotic disorder treatment center is only the first step in achieving long-term healing. For this reason, we arm our patients with the tools and skills they need to be successful after they leave our inpatient hospital. Discharge planning begins at the time of admission, and our staff adjusts those plans appropriately based on the patient’s progress during treatment.
When a patient is preparing for discharge, we provide them with referrals for continuing care with outpatient providers. If a patient would benefit from a progressive step-down plan, we may refer them to a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or an intensive outpatient program (IOP). All continuing care decisions are made in discussion with the patient, ensuring that we take into account what they want their ongoing support to look like.
If you believe that you or a loved one could benefit from the care we offer at our psychotic disorder treatment center, please contact us at your earliest convenience.
